In the spring of 2013 Phillippa brought me a present. It was a week old pig! Yes I thought she had lost the plot, but this pig was to change our lives. It was being kept on a Smallholding in Devon and we could visit if we wanted. The second part of the present was that, when it was big enough, it would be slaughtered and I would then learn how to butcher it.
We made several trips to Devon where we learnt many aspects of running a Smallholding. It was on the drive back from one of these trips the we decided that it was the life for us. So the search began for some suitable land.
In May 2015 we found our dream and were able to get started in the July.
First to arrive were 10 "point of Lay" Chickens. It was very odd the feeling of excitement when after a couple of weeks we had our first 2 eggs and then almost guilt at eating them, but they were delicious.
Shortly after our egg success we brought 5 Pedigree Jacob Sheep. Liking them so much we got another 7 - mainly because it looked more like a flock. Only 1 was old enough to breed from, but that was fine it meant that we could learn at a comfortable pace. That spring 'Madam' (as she because known because she was the flock leader) had twins and we were hooked - we could not wait until the next year.
Early May 2016 we took delivery of 4 Berkshire weaners to grow on for the freezer. It did not quite out work like that (as things often don't at Lanesend). 2 went to the freezer and 2 we kept for breeding - a boar joined our small herd to keep the girls happy.
In October 2016 we decided that some rare breed sheep would be a good idea so 5 Castlemilk Moorits took up residence and as they were older we could put them straight to the Ram.
Spring 2017 saw the arrival of Jacob and Castlemilk Moorit Lambs along with our first litter of "Bacon Seeds".
Even now it is still a learning curve and no 2 days are the same. We have had another Lambing season and 3 more litters of piglets and made some fantastic friends along the way.
Oh yes - All this whilst having to work full time!
In the Summer of 2019 we took the sad decision to stop our breeding of Castlemilk Moorit sheep to concentrate on the Berkshire Pigs and Jacob Sheep
